Wayfinding and Signage Design for India’s grandest public space

Sprawling across 750 acres, The Redevelopment of Central Vista, at New Delhi, is one of the most prestigious projects for India. Designed by the Ahmedabad-based firm HCP Design, Planning and Management Private Limited, which is headed by Padma Shri awardee Architect Bimal Patel, the new development includes a new Parliament House, the Common Central Secretariat, new residences, and offices for the Prime Minister and Vice President.

The landscape’s main feature is the Central Vista, a 3 kilometer long grand avenue bordered by canals, pedestrian walkways, plazas, and parking spaces. The tree-lined avenue with the Rashtrapati Bhavan on one end and India Gate on the other, is flanked by lawns, amenities and parallel pedestrian pathways that lead to transit plazas. This is also the venue for the Republic Day parade, a national celebration held annually on the 26th of January. The combined facilities will serve more than 1 lakh people daily.

Working closely with HCP, Lopez Design is proud to have been part of this second-to-none project as the wayfinding and signage design consultant. We created a unique signage system by combining a strong sense of symbolism grounded in functional planning with the incorporation of universal icons. The wayfinding and signage system is designed for longevity with robust materials and finishes. Our inclusive approach with emphasis on accessibility, ensures that it caters to a wide and diverse audience.

The central road to the Parliament of India that marks India’s living center of administration, Kartavya Path (renamed from Rajpath) exudes a sense of grandeur. At the inaugural address on September 9th, 2022, Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi said Kartavya Path represents our sense of duty as well as the spirit of public ownership and empowerment.

Our team of project managers, wayfinding strategists, architects, industrial and graphic designers partnered with type foundries, language experts, braille experts, and prototyping vendors to deliver a one-of-a-kind system to serve a space of this nature that sets a new benchmark for inclusive design of public spaces.
