Dear Reader,
Even before Milagu thanni (pepper water) became Mulligatawny soup, matches became maachis and coffee became kaapi, we Indians have been famously blending and melding. We invented zero, which makes nothing into something. We are curious, argumentative, loquacious, clannish and innovative. We have a love for excessive ornamentation and a way of enmeshing all kinds of influences seamlessly into our culture, making it our own. We have been protesting, in the meanwhile, that there is no such dedicated spice mix called 'curry powder' as we have always had more than a hundred curries and none have a single origin.
The point exactly? We asked ourselves, how as a design studio, do we capture the vibrant India into what we do. This newsletter brings you two delectable articles: one is on wayfinding in an Indian city "Finding our way in Gurugram". The other "Celebrating Indian culture in brand design" is about how as a design studio, we have dipped into the many aspects of our culture from storytelling to behavior to enrich brands.
We hope this little taste of India will warm you up this December.
Warm regards,
Anthony Lopez
