BRAND STRATEGY + BRAND IDENTITY + PRINT DESIGN + UI&UX +DIGITAL & SOCIAL MEDIA + WAYFINDING & SIGNAGE + ACTIVATION

Branding the historical glory of Bihar.

Our multilayered identity for the Bihar Museum is deeply rooted in Indian symbology and evokes its vision to reinvigorate the glory of Bihar. The website, social media, print collaterals, and wayfinding system align with the brand strategy’s personalized tone of voice. Typography and language are central to communications, bridging history and artifacts.

Challenge

We had to design a brand identity for a museum with a rich cultural and historical heritage. Bihar having been the land of origin for two significant religions - Jainism and Buddhism imposed a great responsibility of maintaining religious sentiments, symbology and meanings while designing a holistic brand identity, communication, and wayfinding system.

Bihar Museum is a cultural attraction for people of different cultures, backgrounds, and age groups. Hence, it needed to reflect the sensibilities across languages, symbols, and colours.

Solution

The history of Bihar, in many ways, is the history of India. Great kings and dynasties were born here. Two significant religions - Jainism and Buddhism
- had their origins in this region. Poets, writers, thinkers, and artisans flourished. Established Ancient institutions of learning such as Nalanda and Vikramashila. National symbols of India derived from Emperor Asoka’s Lion Pillar and the Dharmachakra. Our strategy connected the future of Bihar to this glorious past.

Two thousand years ago, Asoka’s edicts were etched on pillars and rocks, disseminating knowledge and laying the foundations of Indian ethos. The pillar is both a support and a medium of knowledge. Our strategy defined the three pillars that supported past civilizations – Great Governance, Supreme Knowledge, and Way of Life.

These three pillars form the basis of the Museum’s brand strategy, and were envisaged as a place of transformation “awakening the glory of Bihar.”

The Bodhi Tree – having clear associations with growth, learning, and enlightenment – emerged as a primary symbol. Also, being the State symbol, it connects with Biharis and the world as the Tree of Wisdom.

The Logotype - The Devanagari Hindi script supports the English script with the top line element i.e. “Shirorekha”. Together, the symbol and logotype combine to represent the Museum as a bridge to the past and gateway to the future - awakening knowledge as the Tree of Wisdom and connecting history to an institution with the written word.

The tone of voice for Bihar Museum stems from the brand values of the organization - magnanimous, wise, open, friendly, lively, and progressive. This branded tone communicates the organization’s ethos, heritage, and glorious presence.

Project Impact

Bihar Museum’s visual language executes the brand strategy by the use of words in English and Hindi as bridging elements to our culture. The system draws from the understanding of history through written records and the utilization of the power of words.
