UNICEF Calendar

Looking back, looking forward.
We designed a unique interactive print calendar to celebrate UNICEF’s 70th year in India and its key milestones in our country through an exquisite mobile application.
How can we tell the stories of change?
Many people aren’t aware of the stories of change brought about by UNICEF in unison with the Government of India. Celebrating UNICEF’s 70th anniversary felt like an appropriate time to build awareness about these interventions and bring them into focus. These narratives would help to bring a holistic understanding of UNICEF’s role in India and secure its current mission with the organization’s partners and stakeholders. It was also a moment in time to celebrate these achievements across sectors over seven decades.
How did we go beyond the print form?
To celebrate UNICEF’s 70th anniversary in India, we came up with the concept of an immersive calendar in which we recreated the ‘World of UNICEF’. We moved from an A5 size calendar to an A1 size virtual illustration where we compiled the complete history across seven decades.
We were inspired by the Mughal miniature painting for the flat perspective illustrations with specific and minute details. The illustration technique we evolved also allowed us to showcase the actual experiences of employees from different teams and draw references from previous brand documents.
Focus on interventions in health
Our illustration showcased Maternal and Neonatal health by exploring stories that showcased the range of interventions by the ASHA workers of the area, such as point of conception to frequent check-ups of the newborn. The community health center depicted women participating in various activities: coming in for check-ups, traveling in a Janani Express for delivery, and availing of the PMSMA scheme.
A timeline of inspirational journeys
The UNICEF calendar targeted people at two levels. First, it acted as a tool for advocacy. It helped on-ground workers to easily comprehend and communicate what UNICEF does. For the employees, it became an induction tool during meetings, also acting as a repository for reference while creating plans for further initiatives.
Secondly, it aimed to be inclusive, drawing common people in through their own recollections of experiences and personal journeys. We came across heartfelt stories such as a grandfather who was employed at AMUL factory, a UNICEF employee working at grassroots, and an Anganwadi worker who has administered the polio vaccination across several villages.
Navigation Quirks
Scanning the image on the calendar with a phone takes you forward to an app we developed with our technology partner, SPLAT Studio. This lets you enter a richly illustrated landscape - the ‘World of UNICEF in India’ with many inspiring stories of interventions and achievements through partnerships.
