Sikandarpur Pahadi: Identity Design, Wayfinding and Signage System for an Eco-restored Forest

Sik-1_New

We at Lopez Design believe in contributing towards the community around us in ways we know best: through design-first solutions. The Sikandarpur Pahadi, an eco-restoration project, gave us an opportunity to make a contribution for the people of Gurugram.

With effective urban design interventions, the citizen-driven initiative iamgurgaon undertook the restoration of natural greens, water bodies, and forest spaces around Gurugram, Sikandarpur Pahadi being one. They are driving a cultural shift towards a city that is healthy, pedestrian-friendly, and sustainable.

Trail Identification Sign with distance and time taken to cover the trail

Spread across 80 acres of land, Sikandarpur Pahadi is a vital component of the northern region of the Aravalli foothills, the lungs of the local ecosystem. It has been restored as an eco-trail and given back to the community. Once treated as a dumping ground, iamgurgaon restored it to its former condition by carrying out a mammoth waste management effort that lasted four years. The Pahadi also hosts different kinds of seating areas that are built using upcycled materials. Our vibrant auburn signs that have high legibility against the greens narrate these stories to the visitors. The newly-transformed green space now includes bike and pedestrian trails for Gurugram residents. These are marked by our trail signs that guide you along the way.

A Face for the Forest

Sikandarpur Pahadi Identity, Right: Its translation in stone.

With an emphasis on ease of execution, we crafted a simple identity for Sikandarpur Pahadi that consists of the name of the trail flanked by leaves and organic forms on either side, representative of the flora of the region.

Your green-connect to the city

The Pahadi is no longer just another restored forest. Our signs highlight this, by drawing on interesting facts and information, making people aware of the transformation its undergone - in the hope that it inspires people toward a healthier, more nature-conscious living. Our strategy ensured that we used a only an adequate number of signs, followed a minimal sign design language, keeping the experience for the visitors as explorative and unhampered as much as possible.
