DLF Garden City
WAYFINDING & SIGNAGE + ACTIVATION
Navigating through an urban township.
The wayfinding and signage system design for DLF Garden City, a residential township in the sectors of Gurgaon, integrates architecture with ethos along with functional aspects.
The Garden City
DLF required way-finding and location signs for their project Garden City, in Sectors 81 and 82 as well as 86 to 95 of Gurgaon. This included group housing and commercial properties for all the sector roads and plotted areas in Sectors 91 and 92.
Based on the architect’s brief – to create a signage system that follows the Mediterranean architectural theme in terms of form and style, several concepts were created and finally shortlisted to three options.
Key Consideration Factors
The project started with an intricate mapping of all the required sign types and a study of what needed to be conveyed through each sign. Various factors such as visibility, ergonomics, and installation were taken into consideration.
Design Elements
A key element that defined the aesthetic and functionality of the system was the base structure of the pole. This crucial component had to be cast in mild steel. To complement the Mediterranean architecture, we explored several patterns to evolve a final form that met the project’s aesthetic and technical considerations.
An entire system of sign types was designed. The complete design of the DLF Garden City signage with various system combinations shows directional signs for 75 m wide road, 60 m sector road, and 24 m plot road.
Material Detailing
The stainless steel components were finished in Copper Patina Green and the main sign plate was painted in Dark Green as per the final color palette. Drawings and manufacturing details were carefully designed of all parts were made for fabrication and production to ensure we get the exact form and finish as visualized.
Ergonomic Value
In this wayfinding and signage system design, ergonomic factors were taken into special consideration. Signage heights, text size as well as appropriate placement for visibility were carefully researched and designed for optimum user experience. Specifications for the signage assembly were put together with all the details of production, treatment, and graphics.
Technicalities & Manufacturing
Detailed technical production drawings were made. Prototypes were then fabricated and rectified multiple times to get the desired rendition of the final design. The final sets of drawings incorporated all design changes and modifications for the production run of the system.
A Synchronized Signage System
The DLF Garden City Gurgaon project is a combination of graphics,
wayfinding, and product design. The scale of the project gave us a unique opportunity to bring out an exciting product that synchronized with an
existing architectural theme.
Beyond the graphic design aspect, which addresses various factors like visibility, clarity, systems coherence, and systems branding, we also dealt with the manufacturing of the final product. The manufacturing details included the requirement to last through varying climatic conditions, outdoor handling, and unexpected situations.
The strategic pairing of graphic design and wayfinding and signage system design led to an environmental design project which was cohesive and suitable for the urban township.
