Bundh Behaviour Change

WAYFINDING & SIGNAGE + ACTIVATION

People today, across the planet, acknowledge and appreciate the huge benefits of open public spaces. They are vital for bringing communities together and fostering social ties. Today, with unchecked urban expansion, vibrant public spaces are fast disappearing. Behavioural patterns in society that have evolved over time further contribute to the neglect and misuse of public spaces, demeaning their importance in urban environments.

Behaviour change strategy for Chakkarpur-Wazirabad Bundh

At Lopez Design, our design team is driven by a strong urge to do social good. We took the initiative to strategize behaviour change through design for Chakkarpur-Wazirabad Bundh. This Linear Forest in Gurugram was restored by iamgurgaon into a green corridor with walking & cycling tracks. Visualised as an eco-mobility corridor, the Bundh ensures non-motorised access and an upcycled forest space for the citizens of Gurugram.

We set out to do a detailed observational study to come up with a series of communications and wayfinding, and proposed cyclical reviews to measure their effectiveness long term.

Building a sense of belonging to minimise social and environmental impact

When placed in a clear context, communications can influence and impact visitors’ behaviour in a public space. We approached our audience by centering on the user’s thoughts and aspirations for Chakkarpur-Wazirabad Bundh. We conceptualised the phrase ‘My Eco-Trail’ in multiple languages to give a sense of belonging, ownership, respect and trust to the visitors.

Addressing the key behavioural challenges

We started with identifying the primary challenges that needed to be addressed such as Vandalism, Pet walking, Littering and Safety. Human behaviour is highly complex and influenced by environmental, innate and cultural factors. Our priority was to communicate effectively and simply, and also to come up with solutions that present an immediate response to the identified challenges.

We installed signs and messages along key areas to effectively influence a positive social construct such as:

Pet behaviour

Dual-side printed low-lying signages that are easily visible to the pet walkers and icons to nudge pet owners towards positive behaviour.

Vandalism

Installation of dummy camera signs, which would act as a deterrent to antisocial behaviour.

Littering

Easily identifiable bright-coloured waste bins along with ‘Ownership’ signs nearby, that will go a long way in creating a proactive stance towards constructive action against littering.

Safety

The eco-trail, on one hand, poses several safety issues to its visitors and on the other, it faces the challenges of antisocial behaviour. Wildlife danger signs, keep the visitors from loitering away from the trail by forewarning them while keeping the biodiversity protected.
