Dear Readers,

We often get asked what we do exactly. We decided long back when we started this firm that design did not mean one thing. Why was that? Multitasking comes naturally to us growing up in a country like India. Sustainable design is about efficiency, recyclability and being frugal whether it is reusing plastic cups or eating from banana leaves. Finding many ways to express ourselves is an inherent part of our diverse cultures, from making rangoli to creating decorative patterns. Across our nation, we never believed we had to speak one language or eat the same kind of food.

Design for us is just like that — attending to the needs of a client or organization through the creation of beautiful coherent systems that are inclusive, open, multidimensional and friendly, and yes, unafraid to be many things all at once.

When a young designer steps into this world, it can be a nerve-wracking and challenging phase. It’s important to have fear, as it is important to have desire, and letting these emotions be motivators to your goals. In How to make it as a young designer, we write about why design studios are important incubators for the best designers as well as the best design. Make in India, and Make it in India!
