Art Director

The Art Director is responsible for transforming strategy and creative direction into exceptional design outcomes through hands-on creative leadership and clear communication.

Working closely with the Creative Director and multidisciplinary teams, you will lead projects from concept to delivery while remaining deeply involved in the design and execution of the work. You will be expected to make, shape, and refine the work yourself—not simply direct others—and to articulate ideas, decisions, and feedback with clarity and purpose.

This is a hands-on design leadership role for someone who enjoys creating outstanding work, solving design problems, communicating clearly, mentoring designers, and raising the quality of every project they lead.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the creative development of branding, communication, digital, environmental, and experience design projects.
  • Be directly involved in the design process, from initial concepts and visual exploration through final execution.
  • Translate strategy and creative direction into clear, compelling, and beautifully crafted design solutions.
  • Develop concepts, layouts, visual systems, presentations, and design details yourself.
  • Explain creative thinking, design rationale, and project decisions clearly to clients, colleagues, and project teams.
  • Lead project teams while remaining an active contributor to the work.
  • Guide designers through every stage of the creative process through hands-on collaboration, clear feedback, and example.
  • Review, challenge, refine, and personally improve creative work to ensure it meets Lopez's standards of excellence.
  • Present concepts and design solutions confidently, clearly, and persuasively to clients and internal teams.
  • Facilitate constructive discussions, ensuring ideas and feedback are understood and translated into meaningful action.
  • Ensure consistency across brand systems and communication touchpoints.
  • Balance creative ambition with delivery timelines, technical requirements, and implementation needs.
  • Mentor designers and contribute to a culture of continuous learning, constructive critique, clear communication, and high-quality craft.

What It Takes

We are looking for someone who brings:

  • An exceptional portfolio demonstrating excellence in branding, typography, composition, visual systems, and design craft.
  • 8–10 years of experience in a leading design consultancy or creative practice.
  • A strong hands-on design practice and a genuine enjoyment of making the work.
  • Strong design judgment and exceptional attention to detail.
  • The capacity to think conceptually while remaining deeply involved in design development and execution.
  • The ability to articulate creative ideas, design rationale, and feedback clearly and persuasively.
  • Confidence in presenting ideas and engaging with clients.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to adapt communication to different audiences.
  • Experience leading designers and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • The ability to work across multiple disciplines and project types.
  • A passion for mentoring designers through active collaboration, clear communication, and example.
  • The ability to move comfortably between big-picture thinking and detailed design refinement.
  • The ability to listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions, and create clarity in complex or ambiguous situations.
