Lopez Design created empathetic digital communication systems for PMNCH to mobilize stakeholders across the world to respond to Covid-19

A partnership hosted by WHO, PMNCH (Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health) is the largest alliance in the world for women, children and adolescents’ health. Quoting from a report on the organization’s site — “As past pandemics have shown too often, it is women – along with children, adolescents and the most vulnerable – that don’t receive their fair share of resources and services.” PMNCH hosted two major events on a virtual platform to bring accountability and action in response to the devastating effects of the pandemic.

Lives in Balance: COVID-19 Summit

For PMNCH’s Covid-19 Summit we designed a humanistic system for communications inspired by the Pipli illustrations of the Partners’ Forum 2018. PMNCH’s online summit was a call for global commitment, with a mission to improve post-pandemic healthcare and social protection for women, children and adolescents. The logo with a tilted see-saw symbolized lives off-balance as a result of the pandemic. The identity was animated with motion graphics and was designed to be flexible in applications, as typically required for an online summit.

Accountability Breakfast

Our logo for PMNCH’s online Accountability Breakfast event brought out PMNCH’s agile response to the crisis with a colorful and contemporary interpretation of their mission for an audience that ranged from high level signatories to passionate young participants. The online event in September 2020 had 2200 viewers from 110+ countries registering. The four-hour live broadcast focused on accountability for women's, children's and adolescents’ health. This flagship event that traditionally attracts speakers from top levels of government, civil society, academia, and the UN, — this time included the heads of state of Ethiopia and Estonia.

The role of communication in times of COVID-19 cannot be overstated — levelling the pandemic depends a lot on how well we relay the messages around its spread. Empathetic, authentic and well-developed communication systems — as we designed for PMNCH — can unify stakeholders and help in facilitating society to handle fears and uncertainties during the crisis. The changing dynamics of communications during COVID-19 and thereby, the evolving role of digital, new-age and social media to deliver effective communications, is equally important.
